Frozen II
“Frozen II” is fine. Nothing more, nothing less. This could come as a huge disappointment to some considering the cultural phenomenon the first film turned out to be. Big shoes to fill for a sequel. Unfortunately, “Frozen II” plays out more like a story ripped from a video game than a true sequel. It felt extremely fetch questy. The plot has weird issues that undermine concepts they’ve set forth in the first film, which I won’t give away for spoilers sake. Action wise it does have some moments that are really excellent, but it just meanders too much in between.
And while the first movie had songs that permeated every airwave when it came out, the music in “Frozen II”, while good, is extremely forgettable. And certain characters are essentially cast to the wayside in a baffling decision that never really pays off.
This may sound like I’m skewering the movie, but like I said, it’s fine. Kids will most likely enjoy it and not think about it too hard, and the visuals are excellent. These days the most rewarding 3D experiences come from seeing animated films like this one. They actually have some pop and depth throughout as opposed to the 3D cash in almost every other live action movie has. So for a theatre experience, 3D is the way to go.
If they want Frozen to continue to be a mega-property I hope they try to find some of the magic that made the first film so special.
